The Science of a Strong Start

Every Little Linguist Club kit is backed by research in developmental psychology and literacy science.

    The Comprehension Engine

Research shows that a child's vocabulary starting at age 3 is a powerful predictor of their reading comprehension in 3rd grade and beyond1. By introducing Tier 2 vocabulary - those sophisticated words like resilient, inquisitive and versatile - during these essential years of language development, you are building the framework your child needs to thrive academically.

    The Window of Opportunity

According to the Harvard Center on the Developing Child, a child's brain forms over 1 million new neural connections every second during the early years. Throughout the preschool years, the brain undergoes pruning, strengthening the pathways used most often.2 This makes ages 3-6 a critical window for language acquisition and reinforcement.

    The Logic of Learning

Our goal is not just to teach vocabulary, but to give your child the tools to figure out what words mean on their own. Research shows that children with larger vocabularies are significantly better at inferring the meaning of unknown words they encounter later3. When a child understands how to infer meaning, they do not just memorize words; they develop the skills needed to grasp new words independently.

    The Conversational Foundation

It is a fundamental rule of literacy: a child's ability to comprehend written words rarely outpaces their conversational language skills.4 To understand big words on a page later, they must first hear and use them in high-quality, back-and-forth conversations today. Our kits facilitate this interaction, ensuring those words stick for life and continually raising the ceiling of what your child can eventually read and comprehend.

    What Parents Say

“My 5-year-old son was sneaking into the kitchen to try to get ice cream today. When my husband started to scold him, he said 'Dad, I'm just being surreptitious!' So, the Little Linguist Club definitely works!!!”

    Parent of a 3 and 5-year-old

“This kit is the cutest thing ever. We read the book once already and my daughter insisted on doing three of the activities (VERY sticker motivated haha) and said 'mommy, I wuv doing all these things'. Also, unintentional benefit, hearing a 4 year old who can’t say her r’s properly say big words is adorably hilarious.”

    Parent of a 4 and 6-year-old

“We were driving about a week after introducing the kit and a loud song came on. My daughter said, 'Mom, this song sounds rambunctious!' The context was spot on. I was so proud!”

    Parent of a 5-year-old

“The thing that stood out to me is all the supplemental activities, magnets, engagement moments, etc. that come along with the books. You're not just getting two books—you're basically being given an entire lesson to broaden your kid's vocabulary.”

    Parent of a 5-year-old

“My kids have been asking to read these books each morning. They've gone from asking 'what's that?' to giggling and understanding the meaning… Truly excellent idea!”

    Parent of 3 & 5-year-old

    Meet the Founder

    Designed by a Teacher.
    Inspired by a Preschooler.

My journey in education began nearly two decades ago as a Teach For America corps member, an experience that led to my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. With a career spanning the K–12 spectrum, I’ve taught everything from elementary literacy to middle school English to AP Computer Science and SAT/ACT prep. In those years, I watched too many brilliant students struggle with the sophisticated vocabulary necessary for academic success. By the time they reached high school, memorizing vocabulary words felt like a chore rather than an empowering experience.

I eventually transitioned out of the classroom, but I remained fascinated by how children actually acquire language. I began a little experiment with my 3-year-old son: Instead of using a phrase like "the leaves are so pretty," I’d say "I love the nuanced colors of the leaves!" Instead of "there are so many dandelions in the yard," I'd say "those dandelions are just so pervasive!"

The impact of deliberately shifting from everyday words to precise, descriptive language became clear one day at preschool pickup. His teacher was eager to share a moment that had stopped her in her tracks. When a stack of papers accidentally scattered across the floor, my 3-year-old didn't miss a beat: "We'll just have to persevere and pick them up!" She was astounded, not just by his word choice, but by the casual confidence behind it. In that moment, I realized that sophisticated language can be acquired as naturally as a first word.

Today, I’m proud to share the Little Linguist Club with families looking to give their children the tools to become confident communicators, equipping every child with the vocabulary of a scholar before they even reach a classroom.
